Continuing on the imageries of the Holy Spirit
■Oil is another imagery
*Oil is a familiar biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit
*Oil in the OT is often used to anoint men of God
●●In Exodus 30:23
Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant
500 shekels of cassia—all according to the sanctuary shekel—and a hin of olive oil.
Verse 25 Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil.
●This Oil was used to anoint men of God in the Old Testament .
For Effective Service
**When a person is set apart for God’s purposes , the person in authority will anoint him
●In 1 Samuel 16:13, when God chose David as the king of Israel, i.e., when David is chosen for effective service, he is anointed
●So, for effective service, anointing of the Holy Spirit is necessary
●1 Samuel 16:13 says
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward
●During those days,kings were appointed by God
●in a theocracy – kings, prophets and priests were appointed by God, prophets were advisors to kings
●Samuel was a prophet
*Samuel was authorized to anoint David
*Through the process of anointing, prophets were setting apart the person for special service to God.
Triple Anointing
A triple anointing came upon David
3 verses that show that a triple anointing came upon David:
•1Samuel 16:13
•2 Samuel 2:4 Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.
•2 Samuel 5:3 Therefore, all the elders of Israel came to the king………..And they anointed David king over Israel.
Power to shine
■Exodus 27:20 you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually
●The Bible says You are the light of the world
●If you want to shine this light, you will need this “Oil”
**The oil will give you the power to shine!
●●Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee
● In the New Testament, you are the light of the world
■Light in the Bible represents eternal life, salvation, blessing
■Darkness represents death, judgment, curse
**Isaiah 60 : 2 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people
●in the midst of this deep darkness, we are called to shine
*The Church is the recipient of God’s light
*Also, the Church is a reflector of God’s light.
▪︎▪︎This means that you are a
recipient of God’s light
▪︎▪︎Also, you are a reflector of God’s light.
●●When the oil of anointing falls on you ,you will shine !!
Sanctification
••Leviticus 14:16 speaks about sanctification of a leper .
“He will dip a finger of his right hand into the oil that is in his left hand, and with his finger he will sprinkle some of the oil seven times before the LORD.”
●Here, we see that oil is used for sanctification
●In the New Testament, a child of God is sanctified by the Holy Spirit
●●Titus 3:5 -renewing of the Holy Spirit
**Holy Spirit will wash us and renew us , this is equal to being sanctified
■ 2 Thessalonians 2:13 – sanctification by the Holy Spirit
●When you are anointed, you are infact sanctified by the Holy Spirit!
Healing
●●In the Old Testament oil was used for physical healing, Jeremiah 8:22
●All true healings happen through the Holy Spirit
●Balm of Gilead
In Israel, oil from the place known as Gilead was used for physical healing,
●● Genisis 37:25 They were carrying the balm of Gilead, which was used in healing
●●Jermaiah 46:11
Go up to Gilead and take balm,
●●Evan Jesus used oil to heal !
■Mark 6:7-13
And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
●In the New Testament language, oil represents the Holy Spirit
■All true healings happen through the Holy Spirit
●●James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
●●You too can use oil as a medium of healing ( This is not absolutely necessary) ,but still,it’s one of the many ways available!
●There are many examples for the same , even today the medium of oil works in relation to physical healing.
●oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and all true healings happen through the Holy Spirit
Oil of Joy
■ Oil of Joy – You will lead a life filled with Joy
●Psalms 45:7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
●The first part gives the condition- you have to love righteousness and hate wickedness
●Romans 14:17 says kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit
Source of joy is the Holy Spirit
●Psalms 104: 15 oil to make face shine
●When you receive the anointing, your face will shine due to the joy of the Holy Spirit,
●Isaiah 61:3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning
■Joy is the atmosphere of heaven
●the atmosphere of heaven is filled with joy !!
●●If you are a child of God, you will live in the Joy of the Holy Spirit .
●The language of Joy is laughter
●People are often blessed with Holy laughter from the Lord, and laughter breaks bonds and chains of depression
■Job 8:21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughing,
And your lips with rejoicing.
●When a person receives joy ,he will laugh
●So practice this in your life , smile always
■Psalms 126:1,2 When the Lord brought back the captivity of Zion,
We were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter
●They were captives in Babylon
So, as captives, they never experienced joy
But they later say : then our mouth was filled with laughter !
●●So Laughter is a sign of Victory !!
